Eco-Friendly Detergent in Singapore: Klar, Germany's First Fragrance-Free Cleaning Brand

Klar EcoSensitive fragrance-free eco-friendly laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid and bathroom cleaner made in Germany, available in Singapore

Walk down any supermarket aisle in Singapore and the detergent shelf smells like a flower shop. Lavender, "fresh linen", "ocean breeze". But what if your laundry, dishes and bathroom did not need added perfume to be clean in the first place?

That simple idea is the heart of Klar EcoSensitive, a German cleaning brand that has been making fragrance-free detergents and cleaners since 2002. Klar is now officially available in Singapore through klarasia.com. Here is the story behind the brand, the family company that makes it, and why it deserves a place under your sink.

Quick answer: What is Klar?

Klar EcoSensitive is a fragrance-free line of eco-certified laundry detergents, dishwashing liquid and household cleaners, made with no added fragrance, synthetic or natural. It is produced in Germany by AlmaWin, a family-run company founded in 1993. AlmaWin launched Klar in 2002 as Germany's first fragrance-free cleaning brand, specifically for people with sensitive skin and allergies, and every Klar product is dermatologically tested. The Klar range includes more than 30 products, and seven of them are available in Singapore at klarasia.com, covering laundry, kitchen, bathroom and general cleaning.

Who Makes Klar? Meet AlmaWin, a German Family Company Since 1993

Klar is made by AlmaWin, based in Winterbach, a Swabian town near Stuttgart in southern Germany. In the early 1990s, founder Rudolf Bund began producing laundry and cleaning products from natural raw materials at a time when, by the company's own account, many people shook their heads at the idea.

More than 30 years later, the goal set by the founder still guides every formula: combine strong cleaning performance, very good skin compatibility and the best possible ecological quality. AlmaWin is now run by the second generation of the family, with Marion Jäger and Verena Meier-Bund leading the business.

The Philosophy: "In Harmony with Nature"

AlmaWin's motto since 1993 is "In harmony with Nature". For the company, sustainability means that everyday decisions are guided by respect for nature: preserving resources, protecting natural regeneration and constantly looking for better solutions. As the company puts it, what we do today has to be good for our children and grandchildren tomorrow.

AlmaWin describes the relationship between people and nature as symbiotic: we need each other to survive. As a detergent and cleaning products manufacturer, the company sees protecting clean water as part of its job. In practice, that means saving resources, using biodegradable formulas and choosing carefully selected plant and mineral-based ingredients to help protect lakes, rivers and oceans.

The company is open about the work still ahead. It has achieved a lot, yet it keeps looking for better solutions, with dermatologically tested formulas that care for both skin and the planet. Its R&D team works continuously on new ways to save precious resources and shrink the ecological footprint of every product. Founder Rudolf Bund and Verena Meier-Bund sum up the Klar promise simply: good for you, and good for the environment.

AlmaWin's environmental claims are based on independently verified certifications and awards, including Ecogarantie®, ECOCERT®, GREEN BRANDS, EMAS III and DIN ISO 14001.

Klar EcoSensitive fragrance-free eco-certified detergent and cleaner range available in Singapore

What Is Klar EcoSensitive? Made for Everyone Who Needs Extra Care

Klar was developed for everyone whose skin needs a little more care. The range is fragrance-free, dermatologically tested, eco-certified and vegan, and it is designed to suit babies with delicate skin, people with allergies, asthma or atopic skin, and anyone who is sensitive to scent. From newborns to grandparents, the goal is worry-free laundry and cleaning for every age.

Every single Klar product goes through dermatological testing, which is how the brand confirms it is a sensible choice for people of all ages, no matter how sensitive their skin is.

Why your detergent matters more than you think

No product sits closer to your skin than your clothes. Often, your skin is in contact with fabric 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it is not unusual for detergent residue to remain in clothing. Through sweat, that residue can reach your skin. Choosing natural products without dyes, chlorine bleach or preservatives can help reduce the risk of allergic skin reactions.

Recommended by Germany's allergy experts

DAAB, the German Allergy and Asthma Association (Deutscher Allergie- und Asthmabund), is Germany's oldest and most influential association for people with allergies and asthma. DAAB has tested several Klar products, confirmed them as a suitable choice, and recommends them to its members. No added fragrance, yet strong against dirt and stains.

Why Choose Klar? 6 Reasons It Belongs in a Singapore Home

1. Truly fragrance-free, which is not the same as "unscented"

Fragrance-free means no fragrance has been added to the formula, whether synthetic or natural, including essential oils. It does not mean the product has zero smell: the ingredients themselves can carry a faint natural scent of their own. "Unscented" is a different claim. It describes how a product smells, not what went into it, so an unscented product may still contain a masking fragrance used to cover raw material odours.

For households with sensitive skin, fragrance allergies, little ones or anyone who gets a headache from strong perfumes in a small HDB bathroom, that difference matters. Klar was created in 2002 precisely for skin-sensitive people and allergy sufferers, and every product in the range is fragrance-free and dermatologically tested.

2. Cleaning power from soap nuts

The Klar Universal Laundry Detergent uses natural soap nut extract as its main cleaning agent. The saponin in soap nuts lifts dirt while helping fabrics keep their original texture. Because it also smooths textile fibres, it works as a 3-in-1: detergent, fabric softener and ironing aid in one bottle.

3. Certified by Europe's most demanding standards

Europe, and Germany in particular, is known for setting a famously high bar for what can be called "eco" or "skin-friendly". Klar does not simply claim it. Every product sold in Singapore carries an independent European eco-certification, and every product is dermatologically tested.

  • Ecogarantie: a European eco-label for ecological cleaning and laundry products. Held by six of the seven Klar products in Singapore.
  • ECOCERT: one of Europe's best-known organic and ecological certification bodies. Held by the Klar Fabric Softener.
  • DAAB: the German Allergy and Asthma Association (Deutscher Allergie- und Asthmabund). The Klar Universal Laundry Detergent is tested and recommended by DAAB.

Klar has also led the way in Germany. It was Germany's first brand to hold three major European eco-certifications, and it introduced Germany's first fragrance-free product and Germany's first soap nut liquid detergent.

Behind the products, AlmaWin itself is certified under EMAS III, the European Union's environmental management scheme, and DIN ISO 14001, the environmental management standard. These certifications confirm sustainable business and production practices, and AlmaWin passes the required audits every year. The company also received the 2026 German Sustainability Award, and the Klar range is a winner of the Green Brands Germany and Austria Award 2025/2026.

4. Ingredient lists you can actually read

Every Klar product page on klarasia.com shows the full ingredient list. Take the Universal Laundry Detergent: Aqua, Lauryl Polyglucose, Saponins, Sodium Citrate, Alcohol, Potassium Cocoate, Citric Acid, Xanthan Gum, Lactic Acid. That is the whole list, and 100% of the ingredients are of natural origin. You will not find added fragrance, preservatives, dyes, microplastics, phosphates, optical brighteners or enzymes in it. Across its range, AlmaWin uses up to 100% natural raw materials, and most of its products contain only plant and mineral-based ingredients, sourced from organic cultivation.

The same goes for the whole range. All seven Klar products sold in Singapore are fragrance-free, and none of their ingredient lists include "Fragrance" or "Parfum":

5. Concentrated formulas that go further

All AlmaWin products are concentrates. That means less packaging waste, fewer resources used in production, and lower emissions during transport and storage. It also means your bottle lasts longer. Klar Dishwashing Liquid needs only about 2ml per wash, so one 500ml bottle lasts up to 250 washes. The 1,500ml Universal Laundry Detergent covers 33 loads.

6. Packaging with less waste

  • Recycled bottles: most AlmaWin bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic, so no virgin crude oil goes into them.
  • Recycled cartons: shipping boxes are FSC-certified and made from 90% recycled material, with wood pulp from sustainable forestry.
  • Cleaner labels: labels are made from recyclable materials and printed with mineral oil-free inks and vegan adhesives.

Klar laundry and dishwashing bottles in Singapore are recyclable PE.

Kitchen: dishwashing liquid that is kind to your hands

Klar Fragrance-Free Dishwashing Liquid is highly concentrated and cuts through grease on dishes, glasses, cutlery, pots and pans. Plant-based surfactants and glycerine help keep hands soft, even when you wash up every day. Bonus tip: a small drop on a fresh grease stain on clothing, dabbed in before washing, helps lift it out.

For tougher kitchen jobs, the Creamy Kitchen Cleaner is a fragrance-free scouring cream made with calcium carbonate and bentonite clay, with 100% of its ingredients of natural origin.

Bathroom: a bath cleaner without the chemical cloud

Klar Fragrance-Free Bathroom Cleaner uses citric and lactic acid to dissolve limescale, soap residue and everyday grime on sinks, faucets, bathtubs, shower trays, toilet bowls and tiles. Spray, leave for 1 to 3 minutes, then rinse or wipe. With no added fragrance, there is no heavy perfume lingering in an enclosed bathroom after you clean.

Good to know: this is a concentrated acidic cleaner. Wear household gloves, avoid contact with eyes, and do not use it on marble, limestone, enamel or other acid-sensitive surfaces.

Everywhere else: one all-purpose cleaner

The Klar Fragrance-Free All-Purpose Cleaner is the one bottle to keep within reach for everyday surfaces around the home. Its mildly alkaline formula (pH 8.5 to 9.5) is made from 100% naturally derived ingredients, with no added fragrance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Klar a German brand?

Yes. Klar is made in Germany by AlmaWin, a family-run company founded in 1993 in Winterbach, near Stuttgart. Klar was launched in 2002.

What does "fragrance-free" mean on a detergent?

It means no fragrance, synthetic or natural, has been added to the formula. A fragrance-free product can still have a faint natural scent from its ingredients. That makes it different from "unscented", which only describes how a product smells. Fragrance-free products like Klar are a popular choice for people with sensitive skin or fragrance allergies.

What is the difference between fragrance-free and unscented?

The two labels look similar, but the real difference is whether fragrance has actually been added to the formula.

Fragrance-Free Unscented
Added fragrance None, synthetic or natural (including essential oils) May contain a masking fragrance to cover raw material odours
How it smells May have a faint natural scent from its ingredients Designed to have little or no noticeable smell
For sensitive skin Avoids added fragrance entirely Smells neutral, but may still list fragrance on the label

In short, fragrance-free describes what is left out of the formula, while unscented describes how the product smells. If you want to avoid added fragrance, choose fragrance-free and check the ingredient list for "Fragrance" or "Parfum". All seven Klar products sold in Singapore are fragrance-free, and neither appears in any of their ingredient lists.

Is Klar laundry detergent suitable for baby clothes?

The Klar Universal Laundry Detergent is fragrance-free, enzyme-free and dermatologically tested, and it is tested and recommended by DAAB, the German Allergy and Asthma Association. It is recommended for households with babies, children and anyone with sensitive skin.

Is Klar suitable for people with allergies, asthma or atopic skin?

Klar was developed with these households in mind. Every product is fragrance-free and dermatologically tested, and DAAB, the German Allergy and Asthma Association, has tested several Klar products and recommends them to its members. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, check with your doctor.

What is DAAB?

DAAB (Deutscher Allergie- und Asthmabund) is the German Allergy and Asthma Association, Germany's oldest and most influential association for people with allergies and asthma. The Klar Universal Laundry Detergent carries the DAAB seal.

Is Klar vegan?

Yes. Klar is a vegan brand, with no animal-derived ingredients, and its labels are printed using vegan adhesives.

What certifications does Klar have?

Every Klar product sold in Singapore holds an independent European eco-certification and is dermatologically tested. The range won the Green Brands Germany and Austria Award 2025/2026. AlmaWin as a company holds ECOCERT®, EMAS III and DIN ISO 14001 and received the 2026 German Sustainability Award.
